How We Make Rum: Inside the Fermentation Process at Whistling Andy
Rum starts with fermentation.
Before a bottle of rum ever reaches your glass, there is a process happening inside the distillery that most people never get to see.
At Whistling Andy Distilling, we believe the story of a spirit begins long before the finished bottle. Our rum-making process starts in the fermentation vessel, where ingredients, water, and yeast come together to begin creating the foundation of the spirit.
Watch the fermentation process in action below and take a behind-the-scenes look inside our Montana distillery.
What Happens During Rum Fermentation?
Fermentation is the stage where sugars are converted into alcohol through the activity of yeast.
It is a living, active process. As fermentation progresses, the mixture changes, develops, and prepares for the next major step: distillation.
The bubbling and movement you can see in our fermentation video are part of that process. While fermentation may happen behind the scenes, it plays an important role in determining the character of the spirit that follows.
For a distiller, this is where patience and attention to detail matter.
From Fermentation to Distillation
Once fermentation is complete, the fermented liquid moves on to distillation.
Distillation allows us to separate and concentrate the alcohol and desirable flavor compounds created during fermentation. This is where the work of the distiller becomes especially important.
The goal isn't simply to produce alcohol. It's about carefully guiding the process toward the character we want in the finished spirit.
At Whistling Andy, fermentation and distillation are connected steps in the same process. What happens in the fermentation vessel becomes part of the story of what eventually comes out of the still.
The Craft Behind Montana Rum
Being a Montana distillery is an important part of who we are.
Our spirits are made here in Montana, where we have the opportunity to control and be involved in the process from the beginning. Rather than treating production as something that happens somewhere else, we get to see the process firsthand—from fermentation inside the distillery to distillation and, where applicable, time spent in barrels.
That hands-on approach is part of what makes craft distilling special.
Every batch has its own process, and every stage gives us another opportunity to pay attention to the details that shape the finished spirit.
More Than What's Inside the Bottle
When you pick up a bottle of Whistling Andy Rum, you're seeing the final result of a process that started much earlier.
There's fermentation.
There's distillation.
There's the work that happens inside the distillery.
And, depending on the spirit, there may also be time in barrels that allows the character to continue developing.
That's why we like showing what's happening behind the scenes. The equipment, the fermentation vessels, the stills, and the people working in the distillery are all part of the story.

Because at Whistling Andy Distilling, the story of our rum doesn't begin with the bottle. It begins here—in the distillery.
